By Leslie Walker Tweet -- A tweet is a short message sent on Twitter.

It can only contain140 or fewer characters and is also known as an "update" or "post."Tweet is also a verb, which means to post on Twitter, in other words, send a message on Twitter.

In short, tweeting is the act of writing and posting tweets to Twitter. Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey has said the founders wanted a word that captured the sense of a phone buzzing in someone's pocket, like when you receive a text and your phone's on vibrate.

The word "twitch" came to mind, and when they looked it up in a dictionary, they saw the word "twitter" nearby and liked its meaning -- "short burst of inconsequential information" and "chirps from birds." Thus the company and its product became Twitter (although at first it was "twttr" with no "i.")Soon, the messages sent with Twitter's software became known as tweets, since one definition of "tweet" is literally a noise made by a bird.

The reason tweets are so short is that originally they were designed to be sent via mobile phone messaging or SMS systems, which limited individual texts to 160 characters.

The Twitter founders wanted to leave room for user names and other content, so they imposed a 140 character limit. You just write your message in the blank tweet box that asks "What's happening? Variations on Tweet-- There are many mashup words in the English language that have "tweet" as its base.
